Part of a Roman legion with different standards held up high to show what each group represented.
A Roman military standard is a staff with either a flag, a dragon head,
or some other object at the top to identify what the staff represented. Roman legions, a basic ancient Roman army unit, each carried at least three-four standards to represent who they were. Losing a standard was considered an extremely profound situation, and the Roman military went to great extents to make sure that didn't happen.

Roman military standards were constructed from a long, sturdy staff with an object on top. Most standards had a crossbar near the top from which different flags or objects would hang from. The standards stood very tall so that it could be seen by everyone.
